Day 1: Cologne (Embarkation Day)

 

Arrive at Cologne Bonn Airport, where you will be transferred to the ship.

Day 4: Cruising the Main River, Miltenberg

 

FEATURED EXCURSION: Miltenberg walking discovery tour with exclusive “Village Day”

Get a glimpse of village life in Miltenberg with a choice of excursions—meet an artist at her atelier, taste beer at a local brewery, try your hand at lawn bowling or visit a nearby family-owned vineyard. For a more active adventure, take a bike ride along the Main or hike up to the castle ruins.

Day 5: Cruising the Main River, Würzburg

 

Featured Excursion: Würzburg Residenz visit or exclusive Franconian village of Aschfeld visit

Tour the magnificent Würzburg Residenz, an immaculate example of Baroque architecture and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palace was designed in the 18th century by an international team of architects and artists. Particularly noteworthy is Tiepolo’s ceiling fresc - the largest in the world. Enjoy the lovely gardens after your tour. Alternately, chat with the residents of a Franconian village over cake and coffee before joining them on a guided tour of their town to learn about daily life in the region. This cultural exchange is precisely what travel is all about - getting to know your fellow global citizens. Later, relax onboard with more scenic sailing. (BB, L, D)

 

Day 6: Kitzingen (Rothenburg) cruising the Main River

 

FEATURED EXCURSION: Tour of medieval Rothenburg

 

Go ashore for a guided tour of Rothenburg, a well-preserved medieval town, followed by free time to explore on your own. After dinner onboard, stroll through ancient Würzburg, crossing the old stone bridge over the Main River for a superb view of the city lights.

 

Day 7: Bamberg

 

Featured Excursion: Bamberg city tour

Awaken in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bamberg. Bamberg has one of Europe’s largest intact Old Town centers, and like Rome, the city is built on seven hills - only here, a church tops each hill. Your city tour takes you past the Imperial Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George; the four-winged New Residence; the Town Hall, which is lapped by the Regnitz River; and “Little Venice,” an area of colorful fishermen’s houses from the 19th century. Enjoy leisure time in the city at the conclusion of your tour. In the late afternoon, you will cruise the peaceful, meandering Main River.

 

Day 8: Nuremberg

 

Enjoy a day at leisure in the exquisite Medieval walled town of Nuremberg. Shuttles will be available to take you to and from the historic center of Nuremberg. Walk up to the castle grounds, visit the house where Dürer lived and worked, stop at the farmers’ market, browse the city's charming shops, or perhaps borrow one of the ship’s bikes for a spin along the river. 

 

Day 9: Nuremberg, cruising the Main-Danube Canal

 

Featured Excursions:Choice of Nuremberg city tour -OR- Nuremberg WWII historical tour with Documentation Center visit

Embark on a panoramic tour of Nuremberg. Birthplace of Albrecht Dürer and famous for its pocket watches, the city also held the astounding War Crimes Trials after WWII. Discover the sights of Nuremberg during a panoramic tour. Or turn back the pages of history with a guided tour of the city’s most important WWII sites, including the enormous Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds, the actual site of the Nazi party rallies, and home to the permanent exhibition “Fascination and Terror.” You’ll also visit the newly opened Nuremberg Trials Memoriam which includes Courtroom 600, venue of the Nuremberg Trials that were so instrumental in forging our current ideals of international criminal law. In the afternoon, you'll sail along the most scenic parts of the Main-Danube Canal, a marvel of modern engineering.

Note: Courtroom 600 is an active court. Visitors will only be permitted to see the courtroom during trial breaks.

Day 10: Regensburg

Featured Excursion:Choice of “2,000 Years in One Hour” Regensburg walking tour -or- Jewish Regensburg -or- BMW factory visit

Regensburg, one of the best-preserved Medieval towns in Europe, captures 2,000 years of history with outstanding monuments like the 12th-century Stone Bridge and the towering Gothic cathedral. Your walking tour takes you past the architectural treasures of Old Town as well as the Cathedral of St. Peter, with its magnificent 14th-century stained-glass windows. For a different view of Medieval Regensburg, tour sites associated with Germany’s oldest Jewish community, dating back more than a thousand years. Or tour the state-of-the-art BMW factory.

Note: If the tour lands on a day when the BMW factory is closed, we will visit the Audi factory (weekdays) or the Audi museum (weekends). )

Day 11: Deggendorf (Theresienthal), cruising the Danube River, Passau

FEATURED EXCURSION: Choice of exclusive Bavarian Forest village and Theresienthal glass manufactory visit OR exclusive guided "Go Active" bicycle ride along the Danube River, and Straubing, "A Day in Town"

Ride through the Bavarian Forest in a horse-drawn wagon, stopping to visit a renowned glassmaking workshop. Or, opt to take a guided bike ride along the Danube. Return to the ship and savor the beautiful scenery on the way to Straubing, where you’ll spend the day and have a choice of activities.

Day 12: Passau - Engelhartszell

FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Choice of Passau walking tour OR exclusive guided “Go Active” Bavarian river bicycle ride

Your guided walking discovery tour of Passau is a fine introduction to this charming and well-preserved town, strategically situated at the confluence of three rivers. You will also have free time to roam on your own. Or, cycle along one of the most scenic sections of the Danube’s riverside bike path with an expert guide.

Note: St. Stephan’s organ concert is only available from May 2 to October 31, excluding Sundays and Catholic holidays. An excursion to an alternative venue will be organized if the organ concert is not available.

Day 13: Weissenkirchen (Weissenkirchen or Melk), cruising the Wachau Valley

FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Choice of Weissenkirchen “Village Day” with exclusive guided “Go Active” vineyard hike with wine tasting OR Melk Abbey with library visit

Enjoy a day full of activities in Weissenkirchen—stroll through the village, sample local delicacies and wines, and hike through a vineyard. Or, visit Melk Abbey, home to the famous library that inspired The Name of the Rose. Later, relax onboard during a scenic cruise through the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 14: Vienna

Day 15: Depart Vienna (Disembarkation Day)

Alternately, you might bike along the Danube or Inn rivers with an expert guide or hike along the Ilz River with a naturalist.
